Mycology is a branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi. These are fundamental for life on earth in their roles as symbionts and they are able to break down complex organic biomolecules. By decomposing these molecules, fungi play a critical role in the global carbon cycle. Mycology deals with their genetic and biochemical properties, taxonomy and use to humans as a source for tinder, traditional medicine, food and entheogens. It also looks into the dangers, such as toxicity or infection. Mycology is closely associated with plant pathology as fungi cause the majority of the plant diseases. A biologist specializing in mycology is called a mycologist. Some fingi can cause diseases in humans and other animals and study of this is referred to as medical mycology.
