Bodheswaran, a poet and independence warrior, and V. K. Karthiyayini Amma, a Sanskrit scholar, were her parents. She was the founding secretary of the Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, a nature-protection organisation, as well as Abhaya, a refuge for poor women and a mental-health day-care centre. The Kerala State Women's Commission was chaired by her. She was a key figure in the Save Silent Valley movement.
