Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control

Presentations | English

What is a musculoskeletal hazard? Musculoskeletal Disorders or MSDs are injuries and disorders that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs, blood vessels etc.). Common musculoskeletal disorders include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis, Muscle or tendon strain and so on. Some causes of musculoskeletal disorders can be lifting heavy or bulky loads, pushing, pulling or dragging heavy loads, stretching, twisting and reaching. Repetitive work, particularly using the same hand or arm action can also cause the same. They result from one or more of these tissues having to work harder than they are designed to. These conditions are the leading contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability in 160 countries. Because of population increases and ageing, the number of people with musculoskeletal conditions is rapidly increasing.
