Morphology of Fungi

Fungi are eukaryotic multicellular organisms. They are heterotrophic organisms. They have two forms : Hyphae form and Single celled form. Fungi lack chlorophyll and store food in the form of starch. Fungi consist of long thread like structures known as Hyphae. Mycelium forms from this. The cell wall of fungus is made by chitin and polysaccharides. Fungus has a dense and clear nucleus. It contains chromatin threads. A nuclear membrane covers the nucleus. The cell wall protects the cell from environmental stress. Biosynthesis is a unique feature of the fungal cell wall. Fungi are the principal decomposers in the environment. Based on mode of nutrition, fungi can be classified as saprophytic, parasitic and symbiotic. Mushrooms, yeasts, mould etc are fungi.
