IR? What are the Models of IR? Industrial relation refers to a field of study that examines the relationship between employers and employees. The employers are represented by management and employees are represented by unions. The field of industrial relations influences the distribution of wealth in society and the quality of life for workers and their families. Its models focus on workplace dynamics, such as leadership, pay, and the coordination of activities as well as their impact on productivity. Three popular approaches to industrial relations are the unitary approach, pluralistic approach, and Marxist approach. Dunlop’s Industrial Relations System Model: Dunlop's model identifies three key factors to be considered in analyzing the management-labor relationship: Environmental or external economic, technological, political, legal, and social forces that impact employment relationships and Craig’s Industrial Relations System Model: proposes that external inputs from the environment (e.g., legal, economic, political, etc.) impact the actors of the IR system (e.g., labor, management, government) and that through a series of conversion mechanisms (e.g., collective bargaining, third-party interventions, etc.)
