Mitochondria

Presentations | English

The basic unit of life is cell. But what is it that energizes a cell and provides it with the required energy? It is the mitochondria- the power house of the cell. The energy currency produced by these tiny little cell organelles is called the ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate. Unlike other cell organelles, the mitochondria have two cell membranes. Another interesting fact is that though most of our DNA is located in the nucleus of our cells, the mitochondria house its own set that looks very much similar to bacterial DNA. Also while we receive a half of our DNA from each of our parent, it is the mother’s DNA that is replicated into the child. The mitochondria can be regarded as the giver and taker of life. It provides energy to the cell and at the same time also decides whether a cell is dead or not. It is not just the power house but also stores calcium. Feeling cold? Shivering? Do you suddenly feel some warmth in your body? It is none other than the mitochondria that produces this heat. The mitochondria, though small is an organelle of large interest. A majority of our bodily dysfunctions can be traced back to a mutation the DNA of our mitochondria. Want a detailed look into this small but powerful organelle? Check out the attached presentation.
