Marine Drugs is the drug obtained from marine organisms which are being conventionally used like shark and cod-liver oils, sodium alginate, agar-agar, chitin, etc. The importance of Marine Drugs is that marine organisms are a potential source for drug discovery. Some marine organisms are proved to be potent sources of drugs. Marine pharmacognosy is a sub-branch of pharmacognosy which is mainly concerned with the naturally occurring substances of medicinal value from the marine. generally, the drugs are obtained from the marine species of bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and sponges. These are mostly invertebrates that include sponges, soft corals, sea fans, sea hares, nudibranchs, bryozoans, and tunicates. Pharmacognosy is "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin, as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources." Approved drugs of marine origin are Cytarabine, Vidarabine, Ziconotide, and Trabectedin.
