The infamous King's Cross fire started at 19:30 on November 18, 1987, at King's Cross St Pancras tube station, a key London Underground junction. There were platforms deeper underground for the Northern, Piccadilly, and Victoria lines, in addition to the mainline train stations above ground and subsurface platforms for the Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith & City lines. The fire originated beneath a Piccadilly line wooden escalator and erupted in a flashover into the underground ticket hall at 19:45, killing 31 people and wounding 100 more.
