Local Self Government

Presentations | English

Can you imagine that Panchayats encompass about 99.6% of India's 5.8 lakh (580,000) villages and approximately 99.6% of its rural population? There were over 3 million elected representatives at all levels of the panchayat in 2020, with nearly 1.3 million of them being women. In India, local government refers to governmental jurisdictions below the state level. India is a federal republic divided into three levels of government: national, state, and municipal. Local governments are recognised and protected by the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments, and each state has its own local government legislation. Since 1992, India's local government has taken two distinct forms. Urban localities, as defined by the 74th amendment to the Constitution, have Nagar Palika but draw their powers from state governments, whereas rural locals' powers have been institutionalised under the panchayati raj system, as defined by the 73rd amendment to the Constitution. The democratically elected Local self-governance authorities in India are referred to as "municipalities" (abbreviated as "MC") in urban regions and "Panchayati Raj Institutes (PRI)" (simply referred to as "panchayats") in rural areas.
