Lipids

Presentations | English

A basic ingredient required by all living cells. Lipids are primarily cholesterol and triglycerides. It is easily kept within the body. Composed primarily of carbon and hydrogen, but also of nitrogen, sulphur, and phosphorus. Long-chain carbon and a carboxylic chain combine to generate fatty acids. They are divided into three types: simple lipids, compound lipids, and derived lipids. They are highly reduced energy storage types. It is essential for the construction of cell membranes and organellar membranes. Functions include buoyancy, the production of biological membranes, insulation, energy storage, protection, hormone-like action, a structural component of the body by providing a hydrophobic barrier that allows aqueous contents to be partitioned, and enzyme activators.
