Gurram Joshua was one of the foremost modern Telugu poets. He deviated from the contemporary poetic style of sentimental poetry and wrote for the benefit of society. Born into a lower caste he was insulted quite a lot in his life. However, he used poetry as a weapon and received honors and accolades from the very people that had once insulted him.
