Learning and Memory

Presentations | English

Learning and memory are closely related concepts. Learning is the acquisition of skill or knowledge, while memory is the expression of what you have acquired. Another difference is the speed with which the two things happen. If acquisition occurs instantly, that’s making a memory. There are three types of memory that are important to learning and they are your working memory, short-term memory, and your long-term memory. Memory is essential to learning, but it also depends on learning because the information stored in one’s memory creates the basis for linking new knowledge by association. It is a symbiotic relationship which continues to evolve throughout our lives. Proven ways to protect memory include following a healthy diet, exercising regularly, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar in check. Living a mentally active life is important, too. Just as muscles grow stronger with use, mental exercise helps keep mental skills and memory in tone.
