The classical dance form of Kuchipudi originated in an area in Andhra Pradesh that was once known as Kuchelapuram, or modern day Kuchipudi. The dance form originated in the 14th century and Adi Guru Sidhedrayogi is credited with its birth. It was further moulded through the ages by varuous prominent gurus like Vempati Chinasatyam and Lakshminarayana Sastri. Till about 90 years ago, only men would perform this art form.
