Close to the modern city of Vijayawada, nestled on the eastern ghats is a beautiful medieval era fortress called the Kondapalli Fort. With a history of over 800 years, this fort has been controlled by many dynasties, starting with the Musunuri Nayaks, various Kamma Rajulu, followed by the Reddy Rajulu, the Bahamani Sultans, the Orissa Gajapathis and so on. Sri Krishnadevaraya of Hampi, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and the British East India Company are also associated with this fort.
