What is the function of superintendent? Serving as the point person for all district matters, the role of a superintendent is to supervise school principals and district staff, work with school board members and to manage fiscal operations. The superintendent oversees the entire district, whereas a principal oversees an assigned school building. First off, the roles of a superintendent differ from a principal based on the decisions each leader must make. Most states require superintendents to hold at least a master’s degree in educational leadership or school administration and have at least four years’ experience in the classroom as a teacher. Some states specify you have a certain number of years’ experience as a school principal or administrator also. Superintendent is defined as a person in charge of a department or institution, or a person such as a custodian who is responsible for the maintenance of a building. An example of a superintendent is a Director of Schools.
