Pediatric cardiologists treat diseases and pathologies of the heart and circulatory system in children. Pediatric cardiologists work with children, from newborns to adolescents, to diagnose, treat, and prevent heart and/or cardiovascular problems, including birth conditions and malformations. Becoming a pediatric cardiologist may require a bachelor's degree in biology, life sciences or a related field, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, a 3-7 year internship in pediatrics, and clinical residency training. The pediatric cardiologist's responsibilities include advising patients and parents to understand symptoms and health problems, directing examinations, treatments and/or surgeries where necessary, and communicating with patients, including opinions, examinations and/or prescribed treatments and tests. This includes keeping detailed records of appointments. results, if necessary, performing tests to determine the health of the patient's heart and/or cardiovascular system; and cardiovascular diseases, disorders and conditions.
