Library assistants issue, receive and shelve library items and maintain associated records. They are also known as library attendant or library clerk. You can work as a library assistant without formal qualifications, however, a formal qualification in library and information services may be useful. As a library clerk, which is sometimes called a library assistant, your responsibilities are to assist librarians with duties like shelving books, help a library patron find reference materials and resources, answer questions or check out books at the circulation desk and issue library cards. The ability to work well with others, to be thorough and pay attention to detail, customer service skills makes a good library clerk. Librarians and library technicians supervise them. Their duties include organising materials, collecting fines for overdue or lost materials, checking in and out books, and other materials to patrons, and returning books to their shelves after patrons have used them.
