Did you know there's a doctor who specialises in the care of senior citizens? A geriatrician is a general practitioner who specialises in the treatment of illnesses that affect the elderly. Geriatric doctors, often known as geriatricians, are doctors who specialise in caring for elderly people who have a variety of medical problems. They are especially concerned in keeping you functional and assisting you in maintaining your quality of life. Geriatric doctors are familiar with the responsibilities of caregivers and work closely with family members. Geriatricians identify and treat problems that affect the elderly. Their patients frequently suffer from one or more chronic illnesses. According to the National Council on Aging, 80 percent of older people have at least one chronic disease, and 68 percent have two or more. While a geriatrician is in charge of your entire care, they also collaborate with other members of your health care team, including: Members of the family, Caregivers, Physicians who specialise in family medicine, Nurses. Geriatricians are medical doctors who have completed their training. Doctors who desire to specialise in geriatric medicine must get board-certified in internal medicine or family medicine after graduating from medical school, completing residency requirements, and becoming state-licensed to practise medicine.
