Economists investigate how a society uses scarce resources like land, labour, raw materials, and machines to produce commodities and services. They assess the costs and advantages of producing and consuming these commodities and services. Economists perform research, gather and analyse data, track economic trends, and make predictions. Their research could focus on energy costs, inflation, interest rates, farm prices, rents, imports, or employment. Most economists are interested in the practical application of economic policy in a specific field, such as finance, labour, agriculture, transportation, real estate, the environment, natural resources, energy, or health. They advise businesses, insurance companies, banks, securities firms, industry and trade groups, labour unions, government agencies, and others based on their understanding of economic relationships. Economists who are primarily theorists, on the other hand, may utilise mathematical models to construct ideas about the origins of business cycles and inflation, or the consequences of unemployment and tax legislation. Economists are concerned with understanding and interpreting financial matters, among other subjects. Others with jobs in this area include financial managers, financial analysts, accountants and auditors, underwriters, actuaries, securities and financial services sales workers, credit analysts, loan officers, and budget officers.
