Dialysis nurses are part of the larger specialty known as nephrology nursing. A dialysis nurse provides care to patients in acute and chronic kidney failure. Dialysis or hemodialysis will be required for these patients in order to eliminate waste from their bodies. Dialysis nurses are responsible for monitoring patients throughout their dialysis treatment and reporting any changes to the medical team. They check and record patients’ vitals, ensure that dialysis machines are set up correctly, and teach patients how to operate home dialysis machines. Despite primarily working with dialysis patients, they specialize in patients with all kidney-related medical problems. They are specially trained nurses who support patients that require dialysis. They provide care before and after therapy to patients both or either at home and the hemodialysis unit. They also conduct health teaching about managing the disease. These include the type of food the patient eats, the level of activity needed, and medications.
