Counselling psychologists work with their clients to improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Counselling psychology focuses on teaching patients of all ages how to cope with emotional, physical, and mental health issues. They treat a wide range of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, personality disorder, negative life events, bereavement, domestic violence, sexual, emotional and physical abuse, trauma and relationship issues. Counselling psychologists often focus on patients’ daily life stressors, helping them find a balanced approach to overcoming stress. They facilitate healthy personal and interpersonal relationships in their patients’ lives. Professionals work with individuals, organizations, groups, and families to reach the root of mental distress and help them find ways to live with or conquer these issues. Some counselling psychologists intervene and assist people in times of crisis or extreme stress, providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of more severe psychological symptoms.
