A contractor is a person or company that performs work on a contract basis. Defence contractor, arms industry which provides weapons or military goods to a government. General contractor, an individual or organization responsible for the construction of a building or other facility. Government contractor, a private company which produces goods or services for the government. Independent contractor, a natural person, business or corporation which provides goods or services to another entity under terms specified in a contract. In general terms, a contractor is responsible for planning, leading, executing, supervising and inspecting a building construction project. Contractors accomplish their duties by planning activities, supervising workers, and ensuring the project follows local codes and laws. When you think of contractor, you may picture construction sites; however, the word has other meanings as well. Legally, if you sign a contract to perform a specific job then you are what is known as a contractor.
