In general, the superintendent’s role is to ‘administer’ the contract and ensure the contractual obligations are performed. Under a traditional construction contract, the superintendent has two separate and distinct roles: to act as agent for the principal; and to act as an independent certifier. A construction superintendent supervises a job site as the construction manager or foreman, whereas a project manager monitors the process and progress from a distance, handling problems and making decisions. Though the minimum required education for a construction superintendent is a high school diploma or GED, because of the increasing complexity of construction processes, employers generally prefer that candidates have a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, Architecture or Engineering. The job of a construction superintendent can be stressful, since this person is on call all the time throughout a project and is expected to do most of the troubleshooting of potentially difficult problems.
