A chiropractor is a health care practitioner who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular problems, with an emphasis on spinal manipulation and/or manual adjustment. Most chiropractors aim to alleviate pain and enhance patients' functioning, as well as educate them on how to take responsibility for their own health through exercise, ergonomics, and other back pain treatments. While chiropractors generally treat neuromusculoskeletal illnesses, they are not confined to issues with the neurological and musculoskeletal systems. Chiropractors may recommend patients to medical doctors or other health practitioners for treatment of lower back pain when appropriate. Many chiropractors have a local referral network or practise in a multi-disciplinary or multi-specialty spine clinic alongside other spine doctors. For many diseases, chiropractic therapy can restore the structural integrity of the spine, relieve pressure on sensitive neurological tissue, and so enhance the individual's health.
