During their shift, a charge nurse is an RN who is effectively "in charge" of a ward at a hospital or other healthcare facility. These nurses do many of the same jobs as ordinary nurses, but they also have some supervisory responsibilities. Aside from patient care, the charge nurse ensures that everything runs well throughout a shift and coordinates with staff nurses, physicians, and hospital managers. These nurses assign duties, create timetables, and keep track of admissions and discharges. To be successful in this job, you must have a combination of clinical expertise, communication skills, and strong leadership abilities. Charge nurses are required in a variety of medical settings. Charge nurses can work at medical clinics, physician's offices, nursing homes, urgent care clinics, and other specialty medical care institutions in addition to hospitals. Because of the administrative responsibilities of the work, charge nurses may be needed to attend offsite meetings, which may necessitate some travel.
