Acupuncture is a type of treatment in which extremely thin needles are inserted into a person's skin at specified places on the body to varied depths. According to research, it can assist reduce pain, and it is used for a variety of other problems. However, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reports that there is minimal evidence for its usefulness in areas other than pain. An acupuncturist will evaluate and analyse the patient's condition before inserting one or more thin, sterile needles and providing self-care or other complementary therapies, such as Chinese herbs. Acupuncture is most commonly used to try to relieve pain, although acupuncturists claim that it may also be helpful for a variety of other ailments. Acupuncture is typically used in conjunction with other types of therapy. Although not all qualified acupuncturists are physicians, the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture can give a list of physicians who perform acupuncture.
