The Muslim festival of Moharram is celebrated in the Telugu states under the name of Peerla Panduga. The Shia sect celebrate this festival. The Islamic New Year begins on the first day of the month of Moharram. In fact, this is not a joyous occassion. There is a tragic story behind the festival. తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో ముస్లిం ల మొహర్రాం పండుగనే పీర్ల పండుగ అనే పేరుతో జరుపుకుంటారు. షియా తెగవారు ఈ పండుగను పాటిస్తారు. మొహర్రం మాసం ప్రారంభం రోజున ఇస్లాం నూతన సంవత్సరం ప్రారంభం అవుతుంది. నిజానికి ఈ పీర్ల పండుగ అనేది వేడుక కాదు. అది ఒక విషాద గాధ. 14 వ శతాబ్దం లో జరిగిన ప్రాణ త్యాగానికి ప్రతీకగా జరిపే ఈ పీర్ల పండుగను ముస్లింలు జరుపుకుంటారు. పీర్ల పండుగ గురించి మరిన్ని విశేషాలు ఈ ప్రదర్శనలో అందజేయడం జరుగుతోంది.
