Both invoke and evoke come from the Latin word vocare, which means "to call." Invoke is a verb that means "to call upon," and it is commonly used when someone invokes a law, right, or authority. Evoke, on the other hand, means "to summon," and is frequently used to refer to summoning memories or emotions. A particular odour, for example, can elicit memories from the past. Despite the fact that invoke still means "calling," it is more of a "call on" than evoke's "call to mind."
