Introduction to Fear of Math

Presentations | English

What is the fear of math? Numerophobia, arithmophobia or mathematics anxiety is an anxiety disorder, where the condition is fear of dealing with numbers or mathematics. Fear of mathematics may create due to the influence of the parents, teachers, classmates and seniors. In the same way, negative perception towards mathematics also may cause the fear of mathematics. A type of anxiety disorder or a mental illness that makes someone very worried and affects their life is known as phobia. Rather, math anxiety is linked to higher activity in areas of the brain that relate to fear of failure before a math task, not during it. This fear takes up mental bandwidth during a math task—creating, for example, my feeling suddenly blank and unable to think. Many people experience stress or anxiety before an exam. In fact, a little nervousness can actually help you perform your best. However, when this distress becomes so excessive that it actually interferes with performance on an exam, it is known as test anxiety.
