International Nurses Day is an annual observance held on May 12 to commemorate Florence Nightingale's birth in 1820 as the founding philosopher of modern nursing. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) established the event in 1974 to highlight the critical role nurses play in health care. Each year the ICN commemorates International Nurses Day with the production and distribution of promotional and educational materials.
