To combat global illiteracy, UNESCO declared September 8th as International Literacy Day on October 26, 1966. The goal was to promote literacy as a tool that could empower individuals as well as entire communities, not just to combat illiteracy. As a result, many people all over the world will be able to find work and improve their lives. UNESCO has been at the forefront of efforts to improve literacy around the world, which is why they are promoting International Literacy Day in collaboration with governments, charities, local communities and more. Every year, the organisation adopts a different theme to draw attention to literacy in all of its forms in a changing world.
