Dalai Lama is the title given to the supreme spiritual leader of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, by the Tibetan people themselves. Tenzin Gyatso was the 14th Dalai Lama, starting from the year 1940 and currently holds the position as well. A spiritual and heavenly figure, he is a strong advocate for the Tibetan independence from China and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his excellent work in advocating against violence and promoting non violent methods to free Tibet from China’s rule. He as always been vocal about wanting a see to Tibet lead a democratized life. He is also the first ever Dalai Lama to have gone to the United States and the western world in it itself.
