Innate Immunity

Immune system in our body is divided in two categories the innate or nonspecific immunity, which consists of the activation and participation of preexistent mechanisms including the natural barriers (skin and mucosa) and secretions; and ii) the adaptive or specific immunity, which is targeted against a previously recognized specific microorganism or antigen. The innate immunity or the innate immune responses are the first line of defense against invading pathogens. It has upgraded itself to protect the host from the surrounding environment in which a variety of toxins and infectious agents. They are also needed to initiate specific adaptive immune responses. Innate immune responses depend on the ability of the body to recognize features of pathogens that are not present in the uninfected host. In layman’s terms innate immunity is the immunity which is present by birth and it is of four types; physical, physiological, cellular and cytokine.
