Indian Writing in English

"Work by writers in India who wrote in English language but their native language can be one from India. Indian English Literature (IEL) has a history about two centuries old. The first book written in English by an Indian was 'The Travels of Dean Mahomed' by Sake Dean Mahomed in year 1793. By late 1800s, the Indian authors who first wrote in their mother tongue adapted to English. In 1900s, Rabindranath Tagore began to translate his works in Bengali to English. Dhan Gopal Mukerji wrote many children's stories and was awarded the Newbery medal for 'Gay-Neck' in 1928. Raja Rao the author of 'Kanthapura' and 'The Serpent' where storytelling quality ones in Indian terms. R.K. Narayan have so many contributions to Indian literature. Some writers like Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, Nayantara Sehgal, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth are born in India but living in a different part of World also played their part in IEL. Among writers we can't forget the Indian poetry contributors like Sarojini Naidu, Kamala Das, Sri Aurobindo, Dilip Chitre and A.K. Ramanujan.
