Importance and Medicinal Values of Mushroom

Mushrooms act as antibacterial, immune system enhancer and cholesterol lowering agents; additionally, they are important sources of bioactive compounds. As a result of these properties, some mushroom extracts are used to promote human health and are found as dietary supplements. Mushrooms have been shown to promote immune function; boost health; lower the risk of cancer; inhibit tumour growth; help balancing blood sugar; ward off viruses, bacteria, and fungi; reduce inflammation; and support the body’s detoxification mechanisms. Mushrooms are a rich, low calorie source of fibre, protein, and antioxidants. They may also mitigate the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. They are also great sources of selenium. Mushrooms are considered to be one of the superfoods due to its high nutrient content, especially protein, dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, mushrooms are also well-known to contain bioactive compounds, such as ergosterol, β-glucans, lentinan, and peroxidase, which possess health functionalities.
