Presentations | English

India is home to 287 million illiterate adults in the world, which is 37% of global total. Illiteracy creates several hurdles in the development of a country. India is a land of diverse cultures, religions and communities. It is the 7th largest country and the 2nd most populated country in the world. Such a small developing country with huge population creates serious problems in every step towards development. According to 2005 UNESCO Global Education Report, India is ranked 106 out of 127 countries surveyed in terms of literacy. India ranks 123 out of 135 country in terms of women literacy. There is a strong relationship between literacy and poverty. Illiteracy is considered as one of the major reasons of poverty in India. Even though the average literacy rate is growing exponentially throughout the year from 1950s to 2020, there is still a wide gap in literacy rates throughout India. Illiteracy among parents, lack of affordable educational facilities and poverty are the main causes of illiteracy in India.
