Hydrogen

Presentations | English

Hydrogen is the simplest member of the family of chemical elements. It is the most abundant chemical substance in the universe which constitutes roughly 75% all normal matter. It is the chemical element with the symbol H and atomic number 1. The hydrogen atom has a nucleus consisting of a proton bearing one unit of positive electrical charge; an electron, bearing one unit of negative electrical charge, is also associated with its nucleus. It is colourless, odourless, non-toxic and highly combustible. Under normal conditions, hydrogen gas is a loose aggregation of hydrogen molecules, each consisting of a pair of atoms, a diatomic molecule, H2. It is interesting that Sun is mainly composed of hydrogen in the plasma state. On earth, most of the hydrogen exists in molecular forms such as water and organic compounds.
