Human population growth impacts the Earth system in a variety of ways, including: increasing the extraction of resources from the environment. These resources include fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal), minerals, trees, water, and wildlife, especially in the oceans. We cannot have a sustainable planet without stabilizing population. As human populations grow, human demands for resources like water, land, trees, and energy also grow. Unfortunately, the price of all this “growth” is paid for by other endangered plants and animals and an increasingly volatile and dangerous climate. Overpopulation is associated with negative environmental and economic outcomes ranging from the impacts of over-farming, deforestation, and water pollution to eutrophication and global warming.
