Thyme is a Mediterranean herb with culinary, medicinal, and decorative applications. Thyme flowers, leaves, and oil have traditionally been used to treat a variety of symptoms and complaints. Thyme has antibacterial, insecticidal, and possibly antifungal properties. Throughout history, people used thyme for embalming and to protect themselves from the Black Death. Thyme contains chemicals that may aid in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. It may also help relieve coughing and have antioxidant properties. People commonly use thyme to treat coughs, patchy hair loss (alopecia areata), dementia, and a variety of other ailments, but there is no solid scientific evidence to back up these claims. Thyme should not be confused with wild thyme. These two plants are not the same.
