May Day, also known as International Labour Day, is observed on May 1st around the world. The day is commemorated to honour the contributions of labourers and the working class. In many countries, this day has been declared a national holiday. In India, it is known as Antarrashtriya Sharmik Diwas or Kamgar Din. Industrialists exploited the working class in the United States of America during the early nineteenth century, forcing them to work up to 15 hours per day. Workers were forced to speak out against the exploitation and demand paid leave, proper wages, and rest periods for the workforce.
