Handicapped People

Presentations | English

Why is it forbidden to refer to people as handicapped? A handicapped person is someone who has a condition that significantly limits their ability to function physically, mentally, or socially. A handicap is a disadvantage in fulfilling a role in life in comparison to a peer group. It is preferable to refer to people with disabilities using language that emphasises their abilities rather than their disabilities. As a result, the terms "handicapped," "able-bodied," "physically challenged," and "differently-abled" are prohibited. A disability is defined as a condition or function that is significantly impaired in comparison to an individual's or group's usual standard. Please see this PPT for more information.
