Hand sanitizer is a liquid, gel, or foam that is commonly used to kill microorganisms on the hands. Hand washing with soap and water is generally preferred in most healthcare settings because it is more tolerated and effective at reducing bacteria. People may wipe off-hand sanitizer before it has dried, and some are less effective due to low alcohol concentrations. Hand washing with soap and water, on the other hand, should be done if contamination is visible or after using the toilet. Non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers should not be used in general. If your hands are greasy or visibly soiled, alcohol-based hand sanitizers may not be effective. View this PPT for more information.
