Genetically Modified Crops

Presentations | English

Did you know that Crops can be Genetically Modified? Genetic engineering is one of the great marvels of 21st-century humans. Genetically modified crops / biotech crops are crops used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using external genes. GM crops are engineered to introduce a new trait into the species. Purposes of GM crops generally include resistance to certain pests, diseases, or environmental conditions, or resistance to chemical treatments. GMO foods are designed to be healthier and cheaper to produce, but genetic modification is not without consequences. They may cause allergic reactions because of their altered DNA and they may increase antibiotic resistance. It increases the cost of cultivation and is more inclined towards the marketization of farming that works on immoral profits. Their production imposes high risks to the disruption of the ecosystem and biodiversity. The Disadvantages of Genetically Modified Crops include both the unknown long-term risks of eating GMO crops and the negative effects that they can have on the environment.
