In 2009, Foursquare launched a location-based game that allowed users to “check in” at various venues. It indirectly turned “life into a game”. Initially, the service was limited to certain metro areas. These gamified check-ins, allowed users to gain points for certain activities (like checking into a new place), badges for checking in, and even allowed receiving the mayor status if the user checked in to a particular venue on more days than anyone else in the past 2 months or 60 days.
