Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been ruled by many dynasties over the millennia. Naturally, the various rulers have built many a fort for themselves. Many of these forts can be found even today, mostly in ruins. This multi-part series brings to you interesting information on these forts, including the names of the rulers who built them, their unique architecture, the wars fought there, and so on. Covered in this part is the Panagal Fort, located in the Wanaparthy District of Telangana. The fort is situated on the top of two hills of considerable height. Constructed almost 1200 years ago, this fort compares in strength with the forts of Warangal, Golconda and Rachakonda, and is spread over an area larger than any of these. It is said that the moat around the Panagal Fort had lots of large crocodiles and poisonous snakes. Any enemy that managed to cross the dangerous moat was then attacked by large rolling boulders, and was sure to be crushed to death. It is also said that this fort houses a great number of hidden treasures. And treasure hunters have caused enormous damage to the fort by digging their way through the structure and at places even blowing it up with bombs.
