Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been ruled by many dynasties over the millennia. Naturally, the various rulers have built many a fort for themselves. Many of these forts can be found even today, mostly in ruins. This multi-part series brings to you interesting information of these forts, including the names of the rulers who built them, their unique architecture, the wars fought there, and so on. Covered in this part is the Golconda Fort at Hyderabad. It is believed that the word Golla Konda (heardsmen’s hill) over time became Golconda. Golconda is one of the most important monuments in Telangana. Since 1083 AD the fort has been under the control of various dynasties like the Kakatiyas, the Musunuri Kammanayakas, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, the Bahmani Sultans, the Qutub Shahis, and the Nizams. It is in this very fort that Bhakta Ramadasu of Bhadrachalam was imprisoned. This two-part series, brings to you many such interesting facts about the Golconda Fort.
