Flood by Us or Nature

Presentations | English

If you believe that floods are simply a natural calamity that occurs in impoverished countries such as Africa and Asia, you are mistaken. To begin, not all floods are the result of natural causes. They, too, are man-made. Around the world, there is a dispute about whether nature is to blame for natural disasters, or if man creates or triggers these disasters through deforestation and pollution. A flood in China disrupted the lives of 250 million people and caused widespread devastation, with El Nino regarded as the primary culprit. However, after further investigation, it was discovered that it was caused by large-scale deforestation, which resulted in loose soil and, as a result, massive floods. Washington's increasing development has resulted in more concrete surfaces that protect the surface and prevent water from seeping in. Dikes assist to retain water, but they also block the river off from the floodplain. The floodplain helps to store some floodwater, but shutting the river off from it means that this natural storage is no longer available. Such calamities occur as a result of the resulting pressure on the environment.
