The word biodiversity is a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity" and was first coined in 1985 by Walter Rosen of the National Research Council. Biodiversity is the result of 3.5 billion years of evolution. The origin of life has not been established by science; however, some evidence suggests that life may already have been well-established only a few hundred million years after the formation of the Earth. Evolution and diversity result from the interactions between organisms and their environments and the consequences of these interactions over long periods of time. Organisms continually adapt to their environments, and the diversity of environments that exists promotes a diversity of organisms adapted to them.
