Enzymes Application in Pharmaceutical Industry

Enzymes are important in all living cells because they act as biological catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. Enzymes are crucial elements of every living entity and also address the dominant underlying causes of several health problems. They are applicable in pharmaceutical industries, for group protection and deprotection, selective acylation and deacylation, selective hydrolysis, deracemization, kinetic resolution of racemic mixtures, esterification, transesterification, and many other reactions. Enzymes that are used therapeutically have the great advantage of being economically viable and reliable. Due to high yields, they are easy for product modification and optimization. Pharmaceutically important enzymes are broadly defined as prodrugs that target a specific biological reversible or irreversible reaction to treat a particular disease. Enzymes which are used for pharmaceutical applications include cysteine proteinases, asparaginase, streptokinase, urokinase, pegademase, deoxyribonuclease I, hyaluronidase and glucocerebrosidase.
