Elements of Symmetry

Presentations | English

"In chemistry, a molecule’s symmetry is determined by the existence of symmetry operations that are performed in reference to the symmetry elements. A symmetry element is a line or point that goes through an object. Reflection, rotation and inversion are the three major symmetry operations or namely the three elements of symmetry. A symmetry operation is a process that leaves an object just like it was before it entered the object, even after the action has been carried out. Every symmetry operation has a separate symmetry element which is usually the axis, line, point or plain with reference to the operation taken place. symmetry point consists of each point that that does not change and stays in place when the symmetry operation is performed.
